Diary Event

Firstly, may I personally thank the members who gave contributions and donations towards the club and county jumpers for the three team players and made sure we looked very professional in our approach to the competition. Without members generous support during my time as Junior Organiser, many of the achievements these juniors have achieved would have been made more difficult.

The team comprised of Noah Birch (Captain), Kate Smith and Caprice Sanders who conducted themselves in exemplary fashion both on and off the golf club. Their manners, attitude and etiquette can only enhance the reputation of Sandwell Park.

The weather over the three days was very windy in the main, and very wet Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately, the team had the worst of the weather due to their tee time draw. The day one leader board was dominated by clubs from southern England and links type golf clubs. For anyone who has played Woodhall Spa you will appreciate how flat the course is, with the exception to bunkers, with many having steps to get in and out!! The heather played more difficult for girls than boys from a physical point of view.

The course was set up as such to suit very low handicappers and big hitters and the better stableford scores reflected this. Noah carded 35 points on day one and Kate and Caprice carded 29 points, which was the best girl score in for that day.

Day two started brightly with the weather and the golf, but at the halfway point, the heavens opened with torrential rain, which wasn’t expected until 17.00pm. This caught out spectators; and parents without umbrella’s, and testament to their dedication to their children that they stayed out, without seeking shelter or returning to the club house.

During day two, Noah once again continued his excellent run of form and returned with 36 points. Kate supported again with 29, having gross pars on the final five holes. The team finally finished 18 of 31 with 129 points. The winners totalled 149 and the lowest score was 111.

Once again, thank you for your continued support to the junior section. I am convinced with the limited numbers, but quality junior golfers in abundance, we will contest the England Club Championship Finals again soon.
