2019 will go down as one of the most successful in recent time for the ladies of Sandwell Park Golf Club and one the lady Captain for 2019, Mrs Christine Brewerton will never forget.

Firstly in the Staffordshire County Scratch League the Ladies of Sandwell, after gaining promotion to Division 2 last year, managed to retain their place in the Division with exceptional performances against very strong opposition. Although ably captain by Ruth Hickman, she is stepping down this year and Jan Warner will be taking over for 2020.

There is an inter-club competition run every year for all golf clubs within Staffordshire with two categories, 12 to 24 handicaps and 25 to 36 handicaps. The ladies representing Sandwell Park in the 12-24 category managed to get through to the Final and on Tuesday 10th September came out victorious against Branston at Drayton Manor Park Golf Club to win the Perry Cup. Congratulations to everyone who played in all the rounds and to the Captain, Sarah Scott who will remain at the helm for 2020.

Having qualified in a Club Competition, Rebecca Cheese represented Sandwell Park in the Mactier Cup at Stafford Castle Golf Club on 19th August and in appalling conditions came out on top from a field of 44 players from clubs throughout Staffordshire. Well done Bec.

Two of our Junior girls, Caprice Sanders and Kate Smith have not only played for Staffordshire Juniors and Sandwell Park in both Junior and Scratch Matches but they were also selected to represent Sandwell Park at the Junior County Finals at Woodhall Spa. Although they didn’t come in the prizes it was a magnificent achievement to beat the rest of the Staffordshire Golf Clubs to get there in the first place. Well done girls and of course Noah Birch, who made up the team.

There is a thriving Veterans Section within Staffordshire, you qualify for membership once you’ve reached 50. Two of our lady members, Bev Smith and Ruth Hickman have had the honour of playing for Staffordshire Vets for a number of years, Bev in the 1st team and Ruth in the 2nd team and are looking forward to doing so again next year.

We are a very friendly and welcoming but competitive ladies section who play on a magnificent heathland golf course designed by the world renowned course architect, H.S.Colt which it is widely acknowledged as one of the best golf clubs in the area. As such we have been selected to host both the Staffordshire Ladies County Championship and the Staffordshire Ladies Centenary Vase in 2020 which our Lady Captain for 2020, Sarah Scott, is very much looking forward to.

As you can see golf is a game for any age group. If you don’t play and this article has piqued your interest in golf; if you play but aren’t a member of a golf club or if you are considering moving golf clubs and you would like further information please contact our wonderful Secretary, Victoria Bevin on 0121 553 4637 or email her at secretary@sandwellparkgolfclub.co.uk.
